What this page is for
This article explains how to access helpful videos and how to complete common selection tasks in LearnKey Labs.
It focuses on selecting cells and rows correctly within the lab environment, where response times may be slower than standard software.
If you are already working through your lab and experience issues following these steps, please contact the support team.

TABLE OF CONTENTS
Before You Start a Lab
Recommended Browser
- Use the latest version of Google Chrome.
- Ensure pop-ups are allowed.
- Disable browser extensions that may interfere with the lab environment.
- Use a stable internet connection.
Screen Resolution
- Some labs are designed for larger displays and may not display correctly on smaller screens.
- If buttons or instructions appear to be missing, try:
- Maximising the browser window.
- Reducing browser zoom to 90% or 80%.
- Connecting to an external monitor if available.
Course Material vs Lab Environment
Please note that:
- Course videos and workbooks may demonstrate tasks using Windows.
- Mac users may see different menus, keyboard shortcuts, or interface layouts.
- The expected outcome remains the same even if the steps differ slightly.
External Mouse Recommended
Some drag-and-drop exercises are easier to complete using a USB or Bluetooth mouse rather than a trackpad.
Common Lab Behaviours
Labs May Be Slow to Respond
Some labs require a few seconds before selections or actions register.
Examples:
- Selecting cells
- Highlighting rows or columns
- Dragging objects
- Clicking menu items
If a step does not appear to work immediately, wait a few seconds before repeating the action. [To select...1 Lesson 4 | Word]
Follow the Instructions Exactly
Lab software may check that tasks are completed using a specific method.
For example:
- Using a shortcut instead of a menu option may not always be recognised.
- Completing a task correctly but in a different way may not trigger completion.
If a lab does not recognise your answer:
- Restart the activity.
- Follow the exact method shown in the training material.
- Contact support if the issue continues.

Helpful Videos
You will find helpful videos on the course Labs within each module. These videos demonstrate the required actions and are strongly recommended before attempting the lab tasks.

Selecting Cells
Use the steps below when selecting cells in a LearnKey Lab, for example, in Domain 1, Lesson 4.
Q1: To select a cell range
- Place your cursor on the first cell in the required range and wait until the hand icon appears. This may take a short time.
- Click and drag across the required cells. You can drag down and across or across and down. Both actions are accepted.
- Allow a short delay for the cells to highlight after releasing the mouse.
Selecting Rows
Follow these steps when selecting rows, for example, when setting the print area.
Q2: To select rows when setting the print area
- Go to Page Layout and select Print Titles.
- Click into the Rows to be repeated at the top field in the dialogue box.
- Move your cursor to the Row 1 label until the hand icon appears, then click and drag down to select the required rows.
- Be aware that the lab software may respond slowly.
Navigating Labs on Mac Devices
Skillify/LearnKey labs are designed primarily around Windows environments. While Mac devices are supported for most course content, some labs may behave differently due to keyboard shortcuts, software differences, or browser compatibility. We recommend using Google Chrome, following the troubleshooting steps above, and contacting support if a lab will not accept a valid answer or complete a task successfully.
Use Google Chrome
Where possible, access Skillify/LearnKey using the latest version of Chrome. Some lab interactions do not behave consistently in Safari.
Be Patient with Lab Interactions
Internal guidance notes that lab environments can be slow to respond, particularly when:
- Selecting cells in Excel labs
- Clicking row or column headers
- Dragging to select ranges
- Entering values into fields
In some cases, you may need to:
- Wait briefly for the cursor to change to a hand icon before clicking.
- Click slowly and deliberately rather than double-clicking quickly.
- Allow a few seconds for highlighting or selections to appear
Mac Keyboard Differences
Many LearnKey instructions are written for Windows keyboards. Common Mac equivalents are:
| Windows Key | Mac Key |
|---|---|
| Ctrl | Command (⌘) |
| Alt | Option (⌥) |
| Windows Key | Command (⌘) |
| Delete | Fn + Delete (sometimes required) |
| Right Click | Two-finger click on trackpad |
Apple documents these standard Mac keyboard equivalents. [support.apple.com]
Function Keys (F1–F12)
Some labs may reference function keys.
On most Macs:
- Hold Fn while pressing the function key (e.g. Fn + F4).
- Alternatively, enable standard function keys in macOS Settings.
