What is SQ4R?

SQ4R is a practical study method that helps improve understanding and memory.

It encourages active learning rather than passive reading.

SQ4R stands for:

Survey → Question → Read → Reflect → Recite → Review


1. Survey

Get an overview before reading

Before reading in detail, look through the material to understand what it covers.

  • Read titles and headings
  • Read the introduction and summary
  • Look for keywords and highlighted terms
  • Check questions at the end of the section

2. Question

Turn headings into questions

As you survey the material:

  • Turn headings into questions
  • Write the questions down
  • Think about what you already know

3. Read

Read with purpose

Read the material carefully and look for answers to your questions.

  • Focus on main ideas and details
  • Think actively about what you are reading
  • Take notes after understanding each section

4. Reflect

Think about what you have learned

  • How can you use this in your studies?
  • How would you explain this to someone else?

5. Recite

  • Note anything you do not understand
