What is SQ4R?
SQ4R is a practical study method that helps improve understanding and memory.
It encourages active learning instead of passive reading.
SQ4R stands for:
Survey → Question → Read → Reflect → Recite → Review
By following these steps, you engage more fully with the learning material.

Before reading in detail, look through the material to understand what it covers.
- Read titles and headings
- Read the introduction and summary
- Look for keywords and highlighted terms
- Check any questions at the end of the section
Purpose
This step helps you understand what is important before you start reading.
2. Question
Turn headings into questions
While surveying the material:
- Turn headings into questions
- Write the questions down
- Think about what you already know
Purpose
Questions help you stay focused while reading.

Think about what you have learned
After reading, take time to think.
- How does this link to what you already know
- How can you use this in your studies
- How can you use this at work or in your daily life
- How would you explain this to someone else
Purpose
Reflection helps move information into memory.
5. Recite
Check your understanding
At suitable points while studying:
- Summarise each section in your own words
- Write short summaries
- Test yourself on key points
- Answer the questions you created
- Note anything you do not understand
- Ask your tutor for help if needed
Purpose
This step strengthens memory and shows what needs more work.
6. Review
Reinforce learning over time
Regular review helps you remember information.
- Read your notes and summaries again
- Review key ideas in short study sessions
- Create practice questions from your notes
Purpose
